Groundbreaking Transmission Line in Pilbara to Propel Green Energy Transformation

The Pilbara region in Western Australia is making significant progress toward a sustainable future with the development of its first major transmission line. This ambitious project aims to deliver renewable energy from the Maitland Strategic Industrial Area to Karratha and the Burrup Peninsula, marking a crucial milestone in the region’s decarbonization efforts.

A key element of this project is the strong collaboration with Traditional Owners, represented by the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation and Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation. These groups have formed an alliance and are actively involved in a working group alongside the Western Australian Government. Their participation ensures that Indigenous perspectives and knowledge are integral to the project’s development.

The Western Australian Government, led by Premier Roger Cook, has identified this project as a potential candidate for concessional finance from the Commonwealth’s Rewiring the Nation fund. With up to $3 billion allocated for Western Australia, the project is expected to receive significant federal support, highlighting the importance of state and federal collaboration in advancing the green energy agenda.

The Pilbara, often referred to as the engine room of Western Australia’s economy, contributes around 20% of the state’s gross product and a quarter of the State Government’s revenue. The proposed transmission line, which will include approximately 375 kilometers of 220-kilovolt overhead transmission lines within a 4,780-hectare development envelope, is expected to serve as a model for future renewable infrastructure. This development is not only vital for the region's transition to a low-carbon economy but also for securing its economic future as demand for green steel, battery metals, and clean hydrogen exports grows.

Premier Roger Cook highlighted the project’s significance, stating that the development of the Maitland–Karratha–Burrup line represents the first major step in decarbonizing the Pilbara and will help propel Western Australia’s plans to become a green energy powerhouse. The project also holds the potential to create job opportunities on the Burrup Peninsula while meeting the growing demand for clean, reliable energy.

Energy Minister Reece Whitby emphasized the importance of this project in positioning Western Australia at the forefront of the global energy transition. He noted that decarbonizing the Pilbara, which has long been a pillar of the state’s economic success, is crucial. The involvement of Traditional Owners and industry stakeholders ensures that the project is on the right path to secure decades of economic prosperity.

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, praised the collaborative efforts between state and federal governments. He noted that today’s announcement showcases the significant benefits that arise when states and the Commonwealth work together on energy policy with a focus on people rather than politics. The Albanese and Cook Governments are committed to providing the energy infrastructure that Western Australians need.

Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel expressed pride in the project’s potential to set a standard for clean energy developments in the region. He emphasized the importance of decarbonizing the mining industry to continue providing high-quality local jobs for people in the Pilbara and highlighted the project’s benefits for Traditional Owners, industry, and local communities.

Since its commencement in April 2020, the project has made steady progress, with comprehensive planning underway for the high-capacity transmission line that will support major industry players in the region, including Fortescue. This transmission infrastructure will play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions and paving the way for a sustainable future in the Pilbara.
